Default Endoscope pics

Got tired of constantly cleaning the side of the bike from the oil leaking out the A/C so I did a breather by-pass and vented it to atmosphere, but I realize this is only a cure for the mess and doesn't address why it's happening.

I'm planning on doing cams sometime this year and was thinking I'd go thru the top just so I could replace the breather assemblies and drill the drain holes a little bigger as well. I started wondering what shape the pistons were in and if maybe I was having any issues there.

Any engine gurus care to look at the pics and comment?

Fyi it's an 08 with 48,802 miles on it

Lots of pro builders here that can advise you on the pistons. One tip I can give you is they sell angled attachments for those borescopes that will allow you to see the sides of the cylinders. Might help make decisions about how to proceed.

A compression test also tells a good story... cheap & easy to do.

Best of luck on your project.

Not a guru by any stretch...

Any idea what your Oil Consumption is??

The yellowish rings around the edges of the Pistons is Oil getting past the Rings,, "Blow-by"...
A fair amount of Carbon Build-up on the Piston Crowns because of this...

Seeing some Scuffing of the Cylinder Walls,, surely the Piston Skirts are Scuffed also...

Not atypical for a HD with this many miles...

Fix is; Boring Cylinders to new Pistons / Rings,,, Or fitting a Cylinder / Piston / Ring Kit,,, An opportunity to gain some Displacement / Performance...

Highly recommend checking Crank Run-Out before ordering any Parts...

There are some Good Builders here that can get you headed in the right direction...

Oil consumption is not huge by any stretch. Even the by-pass vent hose has only dripped a couple spots in the garage since I installed it. I figured the edges were showing signs of "blow-by" but just don't have the experience to know where it falls on the scale of being ok or "oh crap you got a problem".

Since considering upgrading the cams I had also contemplated maybe adding a 103 BB kit. I didn't want to go too big or crazy since I had read up where some had issues with the bottom end not being able to keep up with the added horses and torque.

Just hoping to get some opinions on what might be the best course of action going forward

Nah, If if the Oil Consumption is < 1qt between changes imho it's nothing drastic,,, not "oh crap" lol... HDs spec of 1qt/1k is a friggin' joke...

That's the reason that I recommended checking the Crank Runout before buying any Parts... A "standard" 103 BB Kit is not really considered "crazy" Millions of miles on stock 103s out there with no issues...

That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't find the 96" underpowered in any way, but if I need to replace pistons and rings, why not pick up a few inches of displacement but still be a mild and reliable build.

Oil comsumption may be due to being ingested thru the intake via the crankcase breather vent mist.
From the multitude of engines we disassemble on a weekly/monthly/yearly basis, it looks very like most we see. Nothing odd, at least from those pics.

I tore my engine down at 159 miles from new and my pistons look just like yours. Just not as much build up yet. I'm venting to the atmosphere on my new build of course.
