Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
His thinking is that it's a balance issue causing a vibration that's causes pin hole leaks and hairline cracks in that location of the tank. "Seen it a million times" or something to that effect were his words.

Could be something as simple as the tank count was loose.. That will do it also.. If it don't vibrate bad, don't fix it.. Take the motor up to 5500 RPM.. If the balancer is off, you'll feel it tho from what I've seen they are pretty buzy at high RPM..
The plan now is to find somebody willing to weld the tank, remount the tank and ride. If future problems arise I'll send the case to dark horse and do a big bore while I'm at it.
If it was a vibration issue, you would know it as parts will be breaking off left and right... find another mechanic. Had solid mounts in my touring 96a, broke my horn bracket off, lost a highway peg, lost a shifter bolt and almost my shifter, broke my speakers, bolt holes in the fairing were opening up, broke my radio, chaffed through any wires that were rubbing, etc. Just recently replaced my crank and it spun a little bit and was grinding up the snout inside the cam plate and was working on the oil pump.
Welding a used gas tank is insane. I personally don't weld on them because the risk. You can technically fill it up with water but there's still a chance. Id look for a new one and check it for cracks when you sand it down.
If it's in the bottom of the tank why couldn't you braze or silver solder it. Both materials flow nicely so you should be able to smooth it out very well... That's they way we used to fix radiators....
