It was 180 off. Have to switch the wires and plug wires so they are not so crossed up. Definitely something with the exhaust valve/spring. Not looking forward to pulling it all apart again.

Sorry missed the 82 Shovel info... Still though there's got to a way to remove springs without pulling the head...... I'm new to shovels so i haven't tried anything like that yet on them....... Picked one up last December and haven't really messed with it yet........ Most of my time was going into my Evo..... I'm sure some one will pop up with an idea....... or a tool........

Might have enough room to pull the head without removing the motor. If I could get the rocker box off I could do the spring without taking the head off. Maybe next weekend.

I was thinking you should... Head only needs to come up about 1/8 inch.. I've not pulled a shovel or earlier head in 40 years.

40 years ago I did this for a living. This motor would have been brand new when I sold out the shops. This is supposed to be relaxing doing it for yourself. Too close now to just put it off.

Found the problem. Bought new rocker covers(drag specialties)and the casting is bad. Valve retainer hits the casting. A little grinding and a new retainer and it will be good to go. Going to pull the front off to make sure nothing hits there.

Looks like someone installed / removed the left rocker cover stud with a pair of vise grips..

I imagine in the 30 years before I had the motor there has been a lot of that.

Yeah,, You can tell the guy that owned it before you was a hack.. Gasket surface was chiseled at. I gave up on trying to find an oldie to restore.. Better to use new cloned parts.. Less chance of someone messing them up, tho they can have their own issues like your valve collar clearance issue.. I've made that mistake putting together an old round cylinder B44..

Good find. A little die grinder work and you're good to go.... would love to hear a sound bite once you get it all straightened out... good luck man....
