Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Hey guys, just wondering if any does work on the side. My 01 Roadking seems to have several leaks and was wondering if someone in the Orlando area has time to work with me and help me take out the engine and fix the leaks??? thanks, Ryan
While there probably is someone able to help you, I suggest you pick up a Harley Service Manual for your bike and do the work yourself. They are not very complicated machines.
Good luck.
Describe the leaks, maybe include some photos. Not sure you have to "take out the engine" to address the leaks. If you have the service manual, decent set of hand tools and 5 on a 10 scale of mechanical aptitude, this could easily be a DIY repair.
Well there seems to be one one the lower side of the engine. I tightened all the bolts on the bottom pan
but it still leaks. Also I have a new one close to the top on the rear cylinder. I took it to the dealership close to my house and they wanted $1000+ to replace some gaskets. I have a repair manual so I guess I will tackle it when I have a few days off in a row. I know the second picture doesn't show much but that is about how much it leaks.
The leak in the first photo appears to be a leaking rocker box gasket or loose fasteners; easy and inexpensive fix. The leak in the lower photo is could be coming from the inner primary or one of the seals behind the trans pulley.
How many miles on the bike? How does the leak present? IAW, does it leak for a while after a ride and stop or does it leak continuously while parked?
Suggest that you take some brake clean or hit the car wash and clean the under carriage as well as the area between the primary and the motor case, particularly the area around the trans pulley. Also check the trans fluid level. If you don't have the OEM service manual for you bike, suggest you get one ASAP.
only 27000 miles on it. I will check what you said and reply back. It is just a very small continuous leak, maybe one ounce a month at most. Thanks a lot for your help with this maybe it will save me a lot of money I don't have. Ryan
ok, I might have fixed the top leak. I took off the tank, then the valve cover and the rocker cover bolts were extremely loose. I tightened them all to spec so hopefully it will fix it. I will tackle the lower ones next. Thanks again DJL!

There you go!! Hope that solves that issue, and you get the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself!!! Good luck with the other leak....
