Default Cam issues



hey everybody I’m new to the Harley world. I picked up an 01 sportster 1200 very cheap i mean cheap in running and ridding condition. My plans have come to stripping all the chrome and getting it powdercoated black. The left case cover was simple. The right side not so much. YES i have already tried searching for my exact answers but i couldn’t find what i was looking for. So me and a friend decided to crack a few cold ones and try tearing the right side cam over off! First try was a success lol until the part when we were sliding the case cover off and it was all good until i heard the pushrod come down. So now I’m butthurt Billy because i know i have to tear deeper into this to fix my stupid mistake. Remember I’m new to this Harley and the Evo motor... basically I’m asking for a detailed EASY way to fix my mistake. Can i pull the head cover off and loosen the rocker arm and hope the pushrod moves up high enough to push it all back together?! I ordered a repair manual but I’m sure there steps will be to re time the whole motor. I have a few pictures to!

Remove the rocker boxes, remove pushrods noting each ones location, get your lifters back in place,might be hard to do as there there are alignment pins under the little triangular covers on the side of the case,,if you can slide them back up, cool, if not you might have to remove the pins to get them back in place then re install the pins so they ride against the flat side on the lifter,,reinstall cams and verify cam timing,,,,use the book to get it correct, re install pushrods,,,,turn engine till pushrods are at the lowest point, to get on the base circle, on that cyl, reinstall rockers, THEN WAIT 10-15 MINUTES for the lifter to bleed down.DO NOT ROTATE THE ENGINE FOR THE NEXT CYLINDER UNTILL THE LIFTERS HAVE BLED DOWN. After bloeedcdown repeat for other cylinder, then reinstall the rest of the rocker box assembly.
Go slow and use new gaskets and seals, including a new cam case gasket.

Is that a nick in the cam that's still in the cam cover?

So i can’t get away with just loosening the one rocker box and moving the pushrod up? It’s the only on that moved?

There is no easy quick way to get out of the corner you painted yourself into...

Following the Factory Service Manual, remove the rocker boxes and Rocker Supports, and then you can get back to the cam chest.

If you don`t follow the Factory Service Manual religiously during reassembly, you run the risk of bending a valve.

Follow the advice of Dan, that way you will follow the alignment procedure particularly for your bike. Cfg dot on the teeth on the camshafts. Give time to bleed the lifters as well @ TDC.

No, there is no easy way out,,,,the cams are supported by the bushings in the outer cover as well as the engine case. You have to remove the rocker box stuff i described in order to take the pressure off the cam gears in order to refit the cover,,,,,no way around it. Get the manual.
