Default One loud click while trying to start

Hey guys, encountered an odd issue when trying to ride the scoot to work yesterday. When I hit the start switch I hear a very loud click but nothing after that. Doesn’t try and turn over. I tried resetting the computer with no luck, also looked at the battery terminals, battery voltage and relay (all good). I haven’t had a chance to dig into any deeper, but figured I would see if anyone has had a similar issue or knows of another thread mentioning this issue.

I'd start with the starter. It sounds like the bendix is kicking out, but the motor is not turning. Pull the starter and and bench-test it to confirm.

Tighten battery grounds and terminals and load test your battery. Quick way to load test your battery is to hook up a DMM . Hit the starter. If the voltage drops dramatically, bad battery.

Sounds more like a bad solenoid. check voltage on both big terminals on solenoid with start button pressed. if no voltage to starter then replace solenoid.

Start (pun intended!) with the simple stuff, before suspecting the starter. Some auto stores will load test a battery for free, something ordinary mortals cannot do so easily as having the right kit. If that is OK move onto the relay, etc. Also check all major battery cables are clean and tight at both ends, not just at the battery.

Sounds like the contacts on the top of the starter, inside the little house looking thing. They get a step then don't make good cantact, but you hear it hit.

Don`t remove the starter.

Rebuild the solenoid.

Tell us the model and year machine you have.

It’s a 2016 FLHR.

Here’s what I’ve done so far;

Cleaned all grounds and ensured they’re tight

Took the starter off and bench tested it, wasn’t satisfied so I had it tested at the auto store, everything is working properly.

Had the battery load load tested and it passed, hooked up jumper cables while trying to start it to ensure the ecu is getting correct voltage readings and nothing.

I’m at a loss. So I’ll tell you one thing I noticed on my last ride. I noticed a small tick when accelerating hard in 5-6th gear. I don’t know if this will contribute to anything but at this point I’m losing patience!

Put a voltmeter across terminal
In the end you will find you had low crank voltage.
Hit the start button and I bet it drops .below 9.6 volts

This still needs to be checked, it is probably the problem. The solenoid is under the seat, not on the starter.
