103 Engine noises update
They were all answered by the great folks here.
My initial issue was and is mechanical engine noise from my 103 twin cam engine.
To be kind....Its the noise that sounds like a "sewing machine". To me, it sounds more like an engine falling apart. (This is my first Harley)
I was told that most of them do it. But it still bugged me.
I purchased ROCK OUTs from a member in this forum. Although well made and easy to install, I could see no shiny areas on my rocker through bolts, and installing the ROCK OUTs only took away the irregular ticking sound. Maybe a 20% reduction in noise. Still WELL WORTH the price!
I then moved on to another tip also given to me by John. The owner of ROCK OUTs.( I hope that's the right name)
I changed my engine oil over to Spectro Dino 25w60. I live in south Florida. It's always hot here. I'm not sure I'd use 25w60 in a northern state in the winter....
This had a dramatic impact on the noise. Seemed to quell the issue with loose tolerances, or whatever is going on in that crazy engine. I'd say that without question that the ROCK OUTs and the heavier oil quieted the engine by at least 50%. At least. Now, wearing a helmet, I can't hear it at all.
The last thing i did, I wont reccomend anyone else do. I removed the glass packing in my Vance and Hines dual exhausts.
With this modification I can still hear my stereo. But little else. And the sewing machine noise.....tick, tick, tick, tick...is barely there at all.
So, if you have a twin cam and cringe at the sound it makes. You have several easy and inexpensive options.
Good luck to you.
