Hello folks ..
I looked all over to make sure this question was not already answered but got conflicting issues about all kinks of engine noise.. just too many to search through .
I need some help. I just bought a 1985 FLHTC and it seems to me the engine is loud as hell. (note) there is no knocking, no ticking, no screeching, nothing sounds like a rattle and it does not sound like its coming apart.
BUT ! .. It sounds like I can hear every moving part in the engine and is amplified 50 times over .. It has the sound of a kid dragging a stick down the street when riding his bicycle. It sounds like a skateboard on rough pavement.. You can hear the engine dam near as loud as my exhaust pipes.
Here is a link to my youtube video so you can hear for your self. http://www.youtube.com/user/OpryStation
Please email me back what you think it might be.. or leave a message on this forum. I will be living on this forum all winter. bigredflhtc@yahoo.com

What side of the bike is it coming from? Is it missing at a steady speed? Does it make the noise while sitting still or going down the road? Has the bike been sitting for a long time?
Before I do anything I would check the oil filter for metal, change the oil and filter if nothing is found. Those engines are prone to lifter/ cam bearing failure and may have a bad one that will trash the entire engine if not delt with immeadiately.

cant tell what side its comming from .. does it at idl and when running down the road .. does it all the time .. the bike sat about 6 months before i bought it .. Randy says check oil for metal .. he got me scard now .. i will do this today though.
Have you checked the primary chain tension & tensioner? Chain tension easy enough to check through the inspection cover and look for shiny areas on chain or better remove cover to check tensioner and replace gasket at approx. $23.50-32.00. Sounds like a loose chain (marble sound) rattling or teflon is gone and dragging over metal since primary side seems louder esp. if you close your eyes and just listen to the noise. I have a '97 and my tensioner is at it's max for wear/adjustment at 85K miles.
That sounds like it ! .. yea` it does ..
When im going down the road and let off the throttle i can
hear chain slap but the bike is belt drive ... dam, i think you might have something there ...
Change your engine oil with HD360 and your primary oil with Formila+. Sounds like the primary chain to me or you have no oil in the primary. Cut you oil filter apart and see what goodies you find. Strain your old primary oil through a coffee filter or some cheesecloth and then let us know how big the rocks are..
It sounds like the bike needs a good once over anyway, pull the primary cover(big cover on the left side) to check the chain, pull the clips on the push rod tubes and drop them down, slowly rotate the motor (back wheel off the ground in 1st gear, remove spark plugs)by hand, and when the cam is on it's lowest point check to see it there is a push rod loose, you should be able to spin it but not move it from side to side. Do a compression test, you could have a valve hanging up or a broken spring. I would advise you to invest in a H-D service manual, it'll be the best 65.00 you'll spend and it'll also save you a ton of aggrevation.
sounds like my bike. seems excessively loud compared to others and it isn't from the pipes. Slowing going through it but haven't found much yet. Let me know how you make out and good luck.
