this is where mark is when dot is in window
I am about at wits end on this, I have been fighting this timing for a couple of months now (off and on) i have a 1981 FXS disassembled for paint (case halves- up, yes to clean and paint -- I know) i have a book I downloaded and as far as I can tell I'm following it.,
my issue is when the "dot " is in the window, my marks on the cam do not line up , I have rotated the crank until the dot is in the window again and the marks are the same each time. So I lined the marks up if it starts (very hard to get it to start )it is obvious it's out of time (slow throttle response won't idle normally ect.so I am attaching some pics hoping someone can help --- the crankshaft has been out (case split ) so can the crank be in incorrectly causing the mark to be off? i am grasping at straws.

The cam chest marks are cam timing , the fly wheel marks are ignition timing , they dont relate to each other as your thinking , Put a timing light on it and set it
