Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
My grandfather has offered me his 1981 Super Glide Shovel Head only problem is that he has the engine tore apart. I have rebuilt engines in the past but to my knowledge this engine requires the lower end to be balanced and i know nothing about this. I was curious if anyone could point me in the correct direction so i can learn to do this or to someone that is capable of doing this for me. I would love to get the bike up and running again any help is appreciated.
Original shop manual (not owners) will be your best friend if you are going to tackle this yourself. There are a few people here that have excellent knowledge when it comes to shovels. Just ask if you get stuck.
balance the crank?
did you rebuild it?
if so, send it and the upper rotating assy/parts to a qualified shop. the fsm does not cover that.
now if you are just replacing upper parts, i would not worry too much. if you have the old parts, measure the weight and then the new parts and see the diff, if not drastic, put it together.
that would be pistons, pins, keepers, rings. post office has accurate scales but not in us measure, usually gram divisions but easily converted with online calculators.
