temporary engine noise
If the bike sat for 2 or more days, upon COLD start-up, the motor is fairly noisy. (top end) Like the lifters may have bled down. But after 20 to 30 seconds, it's nice and quiet. So lifter bleed down is 1 of my thoughts. Although that seems a bit unlikely. My 2nd guess is maybe the chain tensioners are bleeding down. But I dont think that would create that sound. So what are your thoughts ?

If engine stops with valve open, and engine sits, it will tap a little at start up especial if it does not crank a second or two with starter which usually pumps lifter before it's up to high idle.
Some sound also on cools days at that milage may be a little piston slap till it catches up with cylinder.
Again, if it sounds OK as high idle drops off, check back at 100K and report back.

I would disagree with Ripsaw even though he makes a valid point that if the clatter goes away as the motor warms up, why bother with replacement lifters. My problem with that is that there have been roller and other failures with the "C" lifter which is why I think replacement is a good idea. My all bore 107" motor runs forged pistons that are set up on the "loose" side of piston to wall clearance and it, along with Woods Directional lifters, rattle a lot on cold starts but when up to operating temps, quiet as it can be. I doubt that the OP is hearing piston slap at 30k miles with regular oil/filter changes.
Bottom line, replacing the lifters with a quality piece of hardware, IMHO, would be a worthwhile upgrade.
