I recently bought my 1st Harley. It is a 2010 Sportster Iron883 with only 1875 miles on it. It is 100% stock and I remember the motor waskind of quiet when I got it. Living in NC I rode it on a few very hot days andthe motor started to sound very noisy with a “mechanical” noise on the top halfof the motor and some noise on the bottom half of the motor too. So I went tomy local cycle shop and asked for oil and a filter. The guy asked if I wanted standardoil or synthetic oil and how many miles? I said it has 2400 miles and I don’tknow what do you think? He said youmight want to do the 1stoilchange with standard then switch over to synthetic after that and to change theprimary oil too. I did the oil change (primary not yet), filled it to theproper level and took it for a ride and the engine sounded terrible… like aclunking clanking pig and not in a good way! I had a neighbor who has a 2009 Sportster Iron883 with an aftermarket pipe come over with his and listen and compare. His engine sounded quieter even with a loudexhaust. Another friend who has had every type of bike listened and heard alittle noise then took it for a short ride and said “it should be fine.” I’m not convinced it isn’t something MUCHmore serious. I looked at the head and saw some oil slightly leaking out. Ithought maybe since it sat for so many years maybe things loosened up and needto be torque down correctly. ? It was smooth sounding before the heat and oilchange but now clunky when driving and seems to have lost some power (or I’mjust used to it now). Right now I have a nice bike that I am worried if I driveit I’m doing more damage than I already think I may have. SO has this happenedto anyone? Is this normal? Is this the engine “break-in” that made the enginesound different? Is it because ofstandard oil? Any advice or suggestions? HELP!!!
It is very hard to make a judgement call on a noise when we can not actually hear it. You need to find a good reputable technician to listen to it. It would not hurt to get a couple of opinions. Paying attention to unfamiliar noise can help you to avoid major problems at times.
My problem is It never was this way before... I know it has changed but like you said without hearing it adivce is just a shot in the dark on what it could be. Does standard oil vs synthetic oil make a differnce? Is there a break-in period and would the engine sound different? The top half of the motor has a very mechanical sound that I never heard before. Seeing I never owned or rode a HD before this bike so it is difficult in determining whether this is normal or abnormal.
I put 13k miles on my 2010 1200c, before trading it. You may need to put on new rocker box gaskets, if tightening doesn't work (common problem with sportsters, although mostly bikes with chrome covers.) Get Cometic gaskets from J&P.
Sportsters are noisy. Top end noise will increase some with synthetic oil, but synth gives a little more protection at start up; no problem if you change to synth, now. You may want to change primary and brake fluids. Exhaust flange nuts are another thing that you need to watch. Loose exhaust flange will increase noise and decrease power. Be careful not to overtighten, though.
At this point, it may be a good idea to have a mechanic check it out. The service manual is an absolute MUST. Good luck, and happy motoring.
hey fellars i got an 03 roadking that i just had a gear put in instead of the old shoe an chain on the cam my mac put gear/busing/cams/push rods/lifters/ the hole ball of wacks
but now there is a clicking sound comeing from it it dont do it first thing when you start it up only when it reaches running temp he checked the oil pressure it is great an when iam running at 55 i can back off on it just a hair an hold it at a steady speed it will stop pecking any thoughts on it would be great
1. Roger you might get the best help if you start your own thread not ask about your problem in someone else's, it could be push rod adjustment if he used adjustables?
2. Bagalluvr, take your bike to a reputable bike shop and get it looked at before any more damage might get done
