I've already removed the primary cover in the last week to check the Compensator, and I am not looking forward to doing it again. Thx.
1. Yes
2. Starter but in order to pull it you'll need to remove the primary cover. The clutch is inside the starter.
3. Best way to narrow it down is to have an experienced guy listen to it. Starter clutch is a common failure. Especially on bigger motors.
4. See 3.

Since you have an early TC with a bigger motor, and it's a softail. The battery may simply be getting weak. Softails (and Dynas) use a smaller battery than the baggers and the batteries tend to not last as long. If the motor is turning over slowly on the first start of the day, it can kick back and make the grinding of a bad starter clutch. Also, make sure that your battery terminals are tight. You can upgrade the starter cables also.. BTW, pulling a starter on a softail is a pain and typically early-early TCs (timken main bearing) don't have issues with compensators.

"Pain" is an understatement. Have done it several times and have nightmares. I can get through it now a lot quicker but it took a couple of times to learn the short cuts but any way you go at it is challenging.

Ive gone through rear with wheel out, seems to be least PITA.
And max is dead on, beef up cables and even the slightly larger HD starter for softails (think it’s 1.4kw) did the trick for mine, non bagger starters have always worn out in my experience

Didn't take me long to figure out rear wheel out was the way to go. Yooper cables on my '05 FXSTD, 98"er at near 12:1 starts with no issues but I do have manual CRs. Li battery and she spins like an 88".
