Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
This needs to be VARIFIED WITH A MECHANICAL SCREW IN GAGE...At 2800 rpm, it was only 15 psi and wouldn't go higher even when I took her up to 3200rpm
I have a S&S 88 engine doing the same thing Idle is around 5 with a mechanical gauge hot cold idle its 15 hot only 15 upper rpm and cold 30 psi upper rpm

The SnS 88 ci motor is an EVO motor. They typically run lower pressure.. What you have probably isn't hurting the motor but you can easily increase the pressure on that motor with a relief valve spring kit. I would make sure that the motor oil is clean and there is nothing going bad. If OK try the next up spring.

It's pretty easy to change on an EVO motor. Service manual will show you where it is.
i just restored this Indian Chief it only has 1400 miles on it been sitting since 2003 i did a complete engine oil flush so yes oil is fresh 20/50 mobil1 syn v twin its what I use in my own RK too...... the oil light came on after 40 or so miles I also ordered a new switch just in case it also at the same time started to want to die out like it was running out of gas I was just wondering if there is a engine kill built in under low oil pressure i don't see it anywhere in the service manual thanks for the reply sorry to hi jack the thread
Ripsaw is right; could be the gauge/sending unit; only way to check is to screw in a mechanical gauge and read. If that checks out, replace the sending unit. If problem still exists, the relief valve piston could be sticking in the bore. You can check that by pulling the cam chest cover and removing the piston; check for debris (tensioner wear) and buff up the piston and replace.
You can use a paperclip inserted into the piston bore with the plate intact to measure piston depth. I believe 2.25" is the spec, I would have to double check.

No engine kill based on oil pressure unless of course the motor seizes up.. :-( I owned a CMC rocket88 that was titled as an Indian (Indian bought CMC). The 88ci motor is a good one. You might have issues with the stock ignition and possibly head gaskets but other than that they'll run just fine.

well the oil issue is solved I put a different test gauge on it and oil pressure hot is idle 12 psi and upper rpm 30 psi so i decided its the sender that is bad.. Now I have the engine dropping issue only did it a couple times after 40 or so miles ill post in a different area my findings i don't want to totally hi jack this gentleman post thx for the reply

Damn those bean counters. Years ago and so many cars, I had never seen senders and brake light switch go bad. I gave up on Harley's brake light switches after 3. And RIP's new car had its brake light switch fixed after a recall. Interesting about the car is it is from one of the smallest carmakers and the car has an outstanding reliability rating. Before taking it in, I looked up under there so I would know if they did anything. Interesting, the switch was in a green plastic adapter clipped on a red adapter hooked to a typical under dash brace going to the firewall. When I got it back, it had a regular looking switch with a stop and lock nut attaching the switch to the brace.
The only other problem was the windshield cracked. RIP took it in and they told her it did not have a de-ice strip at the base which was the once that were breaking. Carryed it to the local glass shop and they ordered a window after looking at it. Came in later that day to pick it up. Still sitting there with no glass in it, the guy told me the front office had ordered the wrong window with no heater. Showed me the attachment plug at the back of the hood. You can't see the strip, only the plug.
