Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Years ago I helped a buddy out with his '08 Ultra Classic he had just bought. We installed some parts I had around the shop to 'get him more power on the cheap'. I put on the small/cheap Cobra 2-1 exhaust, a HPI Billet Pro air cleaner and we threw in a set of 48's I had on hand. That bike made 81hp and 101tq (tuned with Direct Link on a fairly conservative dyno). Since then we have installed numerous sets of 48's in 96's and 103's, they are a great bolt in cam!
Alll I hear are good things about that cam.
When I get the work done. What else should I be changing. Lifter and pushrods. Bearings. How about tensioner or anything else. Thanks.
I have the EZ583 cams in my 2010 96" and it is the best thing I have ever done to the bike. The easy start feature is well worth the money. Shouldn't the 2011 have hydrolic tensioners? Mine is 2010 and has them.
With the S&S ez start cams your paying over $100. for technology you don't need in a bolt in cam. The Andrews 48 tunes in great and no problem with hot starts if it's tuned properly.
What does tune have anything to do with how a hot engine cranks over?
I roundly recommend the EZ start cams if you don't have compression releases, even on a stock 88" engine. That design makes so much sense I'm left wondering why it took Harley so long to incorporate it onto their engines. Other manufacturers of big engines have been using mechanical means to lower cranking compression for years. It took Harley til the 103" to start using it and they went with solenoids.
FYI, that S&S design is so good Indian uses it on ALL their camshafts.
No doubt the 48 is a great cam but I like the idea of the ez583 cam because the 96" does not have ACR`s.
A Stage I 96" with stock heads and head gasket running the 48 cams, CCP will be about 185psi; just a tick above stock; compression not an issue unless one wants to make it an issue.
