Default New build

I have an 05 Road king police. I order a 98” big bore kit from fuel Moto and S&S easy start 585 cam kit. Do I need to run break in oil when I do this build?
Do I need to add decompression switches with the easy start cams? Please add any other suggestions but don’t be an A**ho**

Fuel moto are great to deal with and more than willing to answer any and all questions you may have. They should be your point of contact as opposed to the myriad of differing input you’ll receive here. Not to say that there are not many knowledge folks here, because there is ...but talk to the crew at fuelmoto.

Don't really need break in oil but a good straight weight like Shell Rotella T1 30W or similar would be fine; no synthetic. No, you do not need compression releases with EZ start cams.

Hope the 98 kit has domes. Without the CR won't be high enough. Need a good tuner. Walmart has a good cheap oil. I like any diesel rated 10W40.

I talked to FM recently about a 98” kit and they only offer the flat tops and I think that is close to 10:1 which is much better suited to the 570 cam. Thats a good point you bring up.

one additional thing is the 05 had issues with valve stem seals. I would replace them and if you have a head shop do that then you could cut the heads to get compression up to match.

when I called S&S they said the 585s were a great match for FMs 98”.

could be when I talked with Jamie he wanted more compression with that cam and his positions. I’m Definitely not saying it won’t work, just that it may work better with more compression. S&s on their site says 10 to 1 to 10.5 to 1, some believe 10.7:1 - 10.8:1 works much better with a 98” build.

edit: most conservative guys recommend 195ccp for an all-around good build that doesn't have PMS. Others will go as high as 205ccp. with 10:1 you are looking at about 185 ccp and at 10.5 at 195ccp. Not that you should take my advice but it would be a good question to ask Fuel moto what they recommend to run the 585 cams at

I agree. SnS is afraid of compression for some reason. I suspect that it's because back in the old days they didn't tell the guy to retard the timing. I bought a 113 evo with 10.8 to 1 cr motor from them and they said to run the timing at 32 degrees. It runs the best at 27.. I'm not too hot on the 585 or 570 cam but expect that the 570 would work well with the crappy exhaust port flow on the 05 heads. 05 heads have a big reversion step.

Heck at 10 to 1 with the 570 in a bagger, it probably would not need compression releases or the decompress feature on the cams, with a decent AGM battery and 4 gauge cables.

I pulled the 585's (gear drive, will sell them cheap) out of my 95" build when I went to 98" because they came on so late. I had them at 193ccp and in my heavy bagger they didn't come alive until 3200rpm. I needed more compression to really make them shine. When I went 98" I dropped the comp and went with CR575's. The bike will have more down low where I want it now...

SnS recommend same comp. for 570 and 583 ..... If 570 at 10,4 got 200 ccp the 583 got 220 ccp .?? Maybe SnS should update the info ?
