OK, I have a question on S&S cams. I am looking at a set of S&S 570c cams that are for a later model bike than what I have (2008 as opposed to my 2000). I know I would need to change to a later cam plate for the bearings. that is no biggie. What I dont see, or didnt find out is whether the S&S cams take a stock outer cam chain setup. It appears to be the same as a factory Harley setup, but looks can be deceiving and mistakes expensive. On another tack, is the spline size the same between the early cams, and the later ones? I have the early flat link chain setup currently, but would change to the later roller setup with an aftermarket cam gear (as needed for the cam sensor with MM EFI) just need to know if this would fit, or if im barking up the wrong tree here.
If I understand what you are asking, the later cam inner cam bearing journals are 1" and the early inner cam bearing ID is .875" so the later cams will not fit; you need conversion cams; the Andrews N series, nor sure what . All the associated parts for the later hydro/roller setup, i.e., sprockets, chains, etc. are HD parts which will work with all aftermarket cams.
ok then. if that is the case, then thats what I needed to know. The cases and inner case mounted bearings are different. I was concerning myself with the outer ends, and didnt consider the inner bearings. I knew they were different, but didnt know in what way
As DJL says. If you got cams for an 07-up twin cam, they won't fit an earlier twincam, except for the 06 Dyna. Inner part of the cam is bigger and won't fit the cases. As far as I know SnS does not make cams for early motors that use chains. You can get gear drive tho.

they do show the early cams for chains on their site. the set I was looking at (but wisely did not pull the trigger on until I consulted Y'all) were "gently" used from an 08. Thanks for saving me the embarrasment of purchasing (more) stuff that wont fit......

You are right they do sell early chain cams, but the 07 up chain or gear cams won't fit.
we have set early cases up for late cams with the bigger bearings, these where cases where the inner bearings failed and had to be repaired anyway.if your looking for the best set up for your 2000 is cams with a gear drive (as long as your crank is within spec) or a S&S plate with hyd tensioners
