Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I wanted to throw this on here and see if anyone experiences this.
One thing Im noticing with my bike is gears 1 thru 4 I go thru RPMs in each gear quickly almost feels and sounds like motor is reving high and makes the bike feel not as smooth and little sluggish. Not sure if it’s a cam issue , tune or what. Can anyone shed some light as to why this is? Thx
I’ll leave the better qualified to answer your question, but the way you describe the bike revving thru gears quickly would make me think the bike is quick, not sluggish. I associate a slow revving bike with slow or sluggish - maybe I am just not reading your post as you intended. I am sure cam profile and ramps would play into how quick a bike revs, as well as other things, such as higher engine compression and rotating mass of flywheels, balancers, etc. I have also heard many head porters describe their heads resulting in faster revving motors. Not sure why, but I don’t doubt it, as I recently put on a set WFO Larry Stage 2 heads and my bike definitely revs and builds power quicker.
I am probably taking this thread down the wrong path, however, as your description of your bike going thru the gears quick sounds like it is a problem, while I like the bike revving quick and getting thru the gears fast when I want it to. Maybe more explanation is needed and more info on your bike.
If your engine is spinning up quickly, and in a relatively linear fashion (no noticeable power dips), than either it's running great and you just need to shift quickly, or like Chasingdrakes said, your clutch is slipping. First, second, third and fourth (to a lesser extent) gears normally get run through pretty quickly during hard acceleration, while 5th and 6th take a little longer to leg out as gear ratio, rolling and air resistance have a more dramatic effect on acceleration. What bike is this? Any recent changes? Does it seem slow compared to other bikes?
