Hi all
I recently purchased a 2017 ultra limited , I have it currently sitting in the shop getting the oil pump replaced .
my question is this ...
at this point I can not afford to do a complete stage 2 upgrade , so I was thinking that seeing that the dealership has the bike already opened and are waiting for gaskets to come in , I would like to get them to put in an upgrade torque cam, and then after when I can afford the turner ,air box and exhaust I will get it done . If I just install the torque cam they say my bike will run like crap , and that I would need to do the full stage 2 upgrade.
Are they dying to dick me around ?
Yep, the cam change would require a tune or the engine will run lean, which is not good. An air cleaner upgrader later on would require another tune as it too would contribute to a lean condition. So if you can swing a tuner now, the cam will help a lot, but the full potential will not be realized without an free flowing air cleaner. And a SE tuner is not a one time flash, once it's connected to your bike, it is permanently "married " to it.
Another thought is that the amount you will save on labor by having the cam installed while the oil pump is being replaced will likely pay for most if not all of a SE tuner. Although there are better options for tuners, but that may be all you can get from a HD dealer these days. The labor to add a cam only install at this point should be minimal, otherwise you will be paying the labor to have the cam cover and plate removed again.
Hi Paul
This is exactly why I want to get the cam installed while the cam chest is open , save on the labour cost of them removing it again, I’ll have to check with HD on price of tuner
Dont waste your money on the SE Tuner. The only one they're allowed to sell these days is EPA compliant and will still leave your bike running lean. It's quite limited on what can be done with it.
Then again so is an SE cam. They're EPA compliant. Nothing good cones from being EPA compliant. Makes for a hot running bike. Way better cams and tuners out there than what you'll get at the stealership.
You'll also need a free flowing exhaust for that bike to run it's best and that means losing the Cat. Wont get that done there either.
Why people go to a dealer for performance upgrades is beyond me. They're not allowed to do what really needs to be done.
Save your $$$ and go elsewhere or learn to do it yourself. It's not that difficult. Your engine will thank you.
Don't say you weren't warned when your leg is burning up along with your engine.
You really should save your money up and get everything done at once... That's not something you want to do partial. So you're looking at intake, exhaust, cams, tuner, adjustable pushrods, S&S Premium lifters and cam bearings, don't forget the cam bearings full complement...
If you want to keep your warranty, get the Screamin Eagle torque cam, and the Screamin Eagle Street Tuner. Also buy the cables so that when you get the better flowing intake and mufflers, you can put in the tun yourself from your laptop, which will save you more money. And, once your warranty is up, you can gut the Cat out of the headpipe, and add some fuel to the tune and still be OK. the Street Tuner can trim fuel only, can's change timing like the Pro Super Tuner can.

And when your warranty is up you can fork out all that $$$ again and do it right the second time.
