Hope this is in the right place,
We rode an ultra classic for almost 10yrs, moved on to a few other bikes and I miss the ability to tinker and customize that my Ultra gave me. I can’t justify 2 new bikes in the garage unless I plan to move into the garage permanently probably in a different house after the misses kicks me out lol….
so I’m thinking of picking up a low mileage 09-14ish roadking and slowly making it mine. I’ve read tons of builds and was surprised that guys are taking the 96 to 120 and 124 very impressive. Not wanting to debate 96 vs 103 but wanted real world realistic expectations on a durable reliable build for 2up touring. More interested in low end torque than sheer horsepower.
im mechanically inclined with a garage full of tools but will probably let a competent shop do the heavy lifting on the motor due to the crank change and splitting the case if I go above 110…
Appreciate all the input…
It's really up to you.. What size motor you want... A modest 103 build with stage 2 heads, cam, .030" head gasket, cam bearings adjustable pushrods, lifters, and a tuner (preferable a Power Vision) will get you in the ball park of 110-118 hp/tq.. That set up will deliver very nicely for 2 up touring.. should be able to do this for under 3K if you wrench.. for 500 more you can go to a 107.. That's providing you started with a good foundation..
