Unless it is below 20 degrees I always start mine in gear. Once it is down to 20 the clutch drag can slow starting because as we know HD clutch does drag a bit.
In red, the clutch is not engaged

Yes, if the bike is in gear and the clutch lever is pulled in, the starter should crank, because the clutch is disengaged.

We know the engine is not supposed to start in gear with the clutch engaged, right (at least 07 and later bikes)?

The OP, (and many others) thought pulling the clutch lever in is engaging the clutch.

Pulling the clutch lever in disengages the clutch.

Releasing the clutch lever engages the clutch.
