The end play is controlled on the sprocket side of crank when assembled

Watch Kevin Baxters "harley timken bearing conversion" video for an explanation of how the stock set up works

the non timken motors (03 up) run roller bearings on both sides, the compensator holds the FW assy in the proper place.if the compensator is removed (or comes loose) the FW`s will move back & forth in the case.perfecly normal

Quoted from another website on the need for a Timken bearing.

...I asked John at Darkhorse the question and his response was "why not but let me check on it." Believe it or not, he suggested that the Timken left side upgrade was probably not necessary with what he's seen. He also stated that the roller bearings may even be preferable due to the fact that the stock cases are no longer line bored. The roller bearing supported cranks "self-align" better.

There ya have it. I know I'm not losing any sleep with lefty bearings with my S&S crank. But if you want to throw money away, I'm sure Kirby will take it.
Funny, the guy that did my S&S wheels said the same thing Darkhorse did.

If the twin cams (or any other HD motor) ran a 1 piece crank, the roller bearings would be fine.but the timken bearings give the 3 piece lower end more stability, HD didn't get rid of timken bearings because rollers are better, they got rid of them because it's way cheaper to do so.after running & building the fastest gas & nitro motors in the world,I know what it takes to keep flywheels straight & timken set ups work much better than rollers.now if your going to troll every post I put on,fine.i don't mind schooling you

Full disclosure. John actually elaborated on that quote later. Sometimes yes, sometimes no is the short answer. This is why they want both case halves sent in. Sometimes the Timken might help. Sometimes it can actually hinder alignment. It's a case by case thing. Show me issues with the lefty bearing installed cranks. You can't. No weld either. Seen issues with a weld busting loose too. Not a pretty sight. S&S cranks don't get welded.
