Cool

This video will explain Twin Cam crank runout better than I could in 100 posts. Keep in mind that the Moco recommends replacement of the crank assembly if the runout is truly that high.

OK got back from Roeder's an my friend was mixing the details together. They broke the motor down to address the smoking. They found a bad oil seal an were going to hone the cylinders to address the smoking. They discovered the crank runout while checking out the motor. They pulled the cam plate an saw scaring they've never seen on a crank before. They were afraid it would continue an eventually the oil pump would fail. They gave him the options of a used eBay crank, having them true the crank an weld it or going all in with a stroker kit. Looks like he's going with the S&S 124 kit. They came across as credible to me but what do I know. For the hone an rings an valve guide seal they're charging around $1300 for the repair. Total out the door for the rings/seal an the stroker kit an labor he's looking at about 7K out the door. I don't understand the scaring on the crank or if it were me I'd have them button it up an I'd keep riding it with .008 runout.

For 7K you can get an S&S crate motor that was made to handle the HP. It will come with a warranty from S & S, but you will have to pay for installation. Ultima crate engines will save him a couple thousand...I ran an Ultima Evo for four years with Zero problems. I have no experience with their twin cam engines, but an all new replacement engine sounds better than an old one with split cases and rebuilt. Just saying...

I thought about that too but the labor would push it up an the price may not cover shipping. He likes the thought of keeping the stock motor too. It's his cash I guess.

I'm not aware of an available complete aftermarket "B" engine (softail)

They don't make one. The "A" engines are "dynamically balanced internally"(see Ultima website) The "B" engine is plagued by parasitic drag from the cams, Chains, and large pinion driven oil pump and worst of all the chain driven external balancer so it's not a good candidate for performance mods. Softails in general too btw... They even make an Evo style engine, that mates up to the twin cam chassis and transmissions.

They do? The only thing I see is a Twincam engine case that mates up with an EVO. Got a link?

Actually, I saw it in a video a while ago. It might have been another brand. As I recall it was an Evo style engine with one cam and special cases to accomodate the rest of the drive line. Sorry....I should have checked.
