Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
It started with a loss of power when I shift into 5th and 6th gear and ticking noise while rpms are going but when I grab the clutch and left off of the throttle it goes away ..and now it seems like I'm losing power in the gears as I throttle up through each one . In desperate need of advice as to what may be going on thank u
Well the clutch seems like it is shifting easier but the noise is coming from the top part of the motor I think .an I had someone tell me that it could be the top end of the motor going out . I's that possible
2011 fxdwg ,33000 mile , I just replaced the exhaust 2 days before before I felt something a Little strange strange when I got on the highway and shifted between 5th to 6th As I let go of the clutch handle I felt the bike's momentum slowed for just a second and then it caught. So I guess the beat way to say it is that the 6th gear didn't pick up till after that second of lost power after realeasing the clutch handle then when I got off the highway with lower rpms I could hear faint ticking sound she's never made before
It could be that the ticking you here is an exhaust leak, You explained that you have just replaced the exhaust 2 days before. I would start there and then repost what you find.
+1 on Harley1004's suggestion for the ticking; logical place to look.
If you shifted into 6th gear before you reached 65mph, that would be "lugging" the motor and could account for the temporary loss of power and could also cause some clutch slippage if adjustment is off a bit.

To add to this subject, just changing mufflers in my opinion should not make a large difference in your system/engine fuel management. However, if you changed the complete exhaust system for a more complete flowing system, this may effect your fuel management. Having completed a full exhaust system change, may require an update to your on board computer/fuel management.
Hi, it is hard to understand if the problem is related to the clutch slipping or not. But if it is slipping you should hear an increase if rpm together with the power loss.
But as you have not reported that, something else could have caused the bike to become sensitive to lugging.
As, I think others above mentioned, by replacing exhaust there may be need for retuning to regain lost torque, or is there an exhaust leak. Something could be lose or the exhaust may touch something.
As you say the noice is coming from the upper part of the engine, I come to think about the top motor mount stabilizer link. It could be lose.
I hope you will find the cause, if not already.
