Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
yeah loctite...never used it on pushrods myself but I've seen plenty of people here say theyve used it and supposedly fuelmoto recommends it. Not a mechanic by the way but never had one come lose on me or broke a nut...yet. I don't work on schwins either...keep peddling.
Smith Brothers recommends it too; red! I don't see anything wrong with it "just a dab'll do ya". You have to be an old fart to remember the Brylcream commercials.

Hell I remember the smell of that stuff. My dad used it back in the day. Do they still make that crap?

be careful if you use home grown nut, aka, ones threaded with shop tools. taps are notorious for off threading especially if used a lot. if you want consistent threading, you cannot beat a screw threading machine that is held in strict tolerance. shoot, just using off center pressure will cause a miss thread using a hand tap. i often wondered why hd got away from the spring nuts of old????
had a nut back off my s&s tapered pushrods whichI'm sure was an installer issue (me). I used a dab of blue loctite after that and no more issues. wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
I know this thread is a few months old but I have an additional question. I ride 2021 FLTRX with harley stage II torque cam. I adjusted the pushrods in the proper manner and after several short runs, and the engine at 300 F, I noticed loud ticking in upper heads. So parked her, let the bike cool off and checked my pushrod adjustment. Put front cylinder on TDCC, and after a minute or less I could spin, by hand, the front intake pushrod. I could NOT do the same with the exhaust pushrod. I am pretty sure I adjusted both the same. They are SE pushrods, and I am using S&S lifters. Harley says 2.5 turns, S&S wants 3 complete. So I split the difference. 2.8 turns, or 2 flats short of 3. ANYWAY, should I or can I readjust just the exhaust pushrod? And if I readjust can I loosen, or back the pushrod just enough so that it spins, like the intake pushrod?
