Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
2021 Road Glide ---- October, 2022, installed SE torque cam, and SE high flow air cleaner. (stage II) Always getting engine knock beginning at 45 MAP load, on up until I let off the throttle a bit. Two different Harley dealers said bike was fine after they did a diagnostic. Both said I need higher rpm's with that cam. So, did lots of testing with SE tuner. Mostly 4th and 5th gear, making sure I was cruising above 2500, and slowly but steadily on the gas. And....engine knock. Tuner showed knock retard starting and continuing all the way through the engine rpm increase until I let off the throttle. Did compression test. Both cylinders near 200 psi. Increased VE tables by tuner recommendation...no change in knock. Replaced lifters and adjustable push-rods with S&S...no change. Add to this, that when put the bike through mild paces, the engine heats up dramatically...up to and above 300 F. After that happens, the engine is louder and noisier.
I know this is a long shot But at this point I will take any ideas. Yes, I would like to get dyno tuned but the closed and best priced here is $1000. I don't have that right now.
Both cylinders reading same CCP, cam timing being off not likely. Does the bike seem sluggish? The engine heating up dramatically would point to sumping but engine knock not caused by sumping.
What tuner do you have and can you remove 5* of timing globally with your tuner and do a test ride while data logging?
One more thing are you using the OEM spark plugs?

Using new Harley spark plugs. bought 1 month ago and about 300 miles on them. Correctly gapped. and checked twice. Using SE pro tuner. I can remove all of that timing but I think I will try something else. I do have software called MyTune. It will show where a data run added or removed spark, and add that to a table that I can paste to the SE tune.
May want to take a look in the cam chest and verify the timing marks, may need a new gasket, may not.
Won't cost much to take a look.
Was thinking of checking it out. They way I work, it would take a full day to take off the mufflers, and headers, and drain the oil and THEN look in the cam chest. I can do it, but if I can find something else.....

Before you take it all apart, a quick compression test will tell you if the cams are on or off.. Normally a tooth off will indicate approximately 30 psi difference between cylinders.. if cams are on it'll be pretty close..A few psi at most..
