This is the problem when a Sportster question is posted outside the Sportster section, you get answers from people who assume every bike made is just like their big twin.

I finally found a 1970-78 Sportster manual. As Dan has been saying, the manual does not say left hand thread anywhere. When it doesn't, it's right hand threads.

"Insert Clutch Lock Plate (4), Part No. 97173-71, between clutch hub (5) and sprocket (6) as shown
in Figure 4-11 . Bend ears of lockwasher (15, Figure 4-9) away from hub nut. Remove
clutch hub nut(14), using Wrench(7).Part No. 94647-52 (see Figure 4-11).

Assembly is essentially the reverse order of disassembly. Be certain that all parts are clean
before reassembling.
Apply a lightcoat of grease to compensating sprocket shaft extension. Assemble clutch sprocket,
front chain and com pensating sprocket in one operation. Be sure chainadjuster is positioned loose
behind chain. Reassemble compensat*ing sprocket as described under " ASSEMBLING COMPEN*SATING
SPROCKET."
Install clutch hub onclutch gear splines. Install Lock Plate, Part No. 97173 -71, and Sprocket
Locking Link Tool, Part No. 97200 -65, as shown in Figure 4-11.
Install a new lockwasher (15) over clutch gear splines and install hub nut (14) using Wrench, Part
No. 94647-62, as shown in Figure 4-11. Follow up hand tightening by striking wrenc hhandle
with a soft mallet to securely seat nut to at least 150 ft-lbs torque. Bendear of washer (15) against
hex head of hub nut. Clutch hub must run free on shaft after tightening."

I should have pointed out that the OP would likely get more and better replies if he posted in the Ironhead sub forum; my bad. The OP finally did get better replies from some of the more knowledgeable members which is one of the great things about this forum. There is usually someoone that has experienced the issue that the OP is dealing with which makes it more imporant to help posters get their questions posted in the appropriate section of the forum; something I am supposed to be watching for.

yep
not all harleys are harleys
when they departed from the lock tab washer to the conical, they went left hand to help keep the assy together in case for some unseemly reason it loosened.
tab washer was great but toooo many would not change them out.
ever had a clutch basket come off?? i had one come off my victor 441 and pass me up as i came to a rolling stop. glad it was open primary and did not take my foot off.

I would have never thought of going to the Ironhead sub forum. Engine Mechanical Topics seemed a natural place to go......
Like Bustert stated; " not all Harleys are Harleys". This applies to me.
Anyway a lot of experience here and all the responses were very much appreciated.

Understood; unless you have been on the forum for a while, you wouldn't even know some of the other sections existed. I should have pointed you there after your first post but the right members have jumped in, so all's well that ends well. Although the thread won't end until you break that nut loose; let us know and pictures are always welcom.

So if I understand your response correctly, the Ironhead sub forum and it's contents are more applicable to my machine?
That would be good to know. Thanks again

I know very little about Ironheads although a '76 Sportster was my first Harley and had so many issues that, at the time, I wasn't inclined to deal with so I sold it. However, if I did own an Ironhead today and was having issues, I would be looking here and on HTT in the Ironhead sub forum for answers.

Looks like your tool worked out nicely, kudos for ingenuity.
