Now something you need to learn is some forum manners.
You should go in with hat in hand attitude to ASK for some help being ,a newibe FNG (F'in New Guy )
You go in there with this attitude you'll get kicked to the curb as fast or faster than this place.
This is close to taking a Ford 150 to a GMC dealer for repairs Its a dumb move sir
Yes because nobody who knows anything about a Harley, also a motorcycle, can't help a fella out and answer this question for me; this is my first bike and I'm trying to get it running right. I've posted on several forums trying to figure this out because after taking my bike apart 3 times now I'd rather not put it back together just to have to take it apart yet again because I did it wrong. Now if you're willing to help, I sure would appreciate it, but if not then unless you're the mod police on this forum then you can ride off into the sunset, friend.
@farmerjohn64 I am the "mod police" on this sub forum. I will let this go for now as it appears that members Northwestern and Jackie Paper might be able to help but I am not sure you know what you are asking If you get snarky again, you and your post will be gone; posting a tech/mech question about a Yamaha on a Harley forum was not without risk. If no one else chimes in soon, there is no help offered and it looks like a dead end, you should leave and start looking on a Yamaha/VStar forum for answers as has been suggested by other members. I will wait and see what happens but don't get your feelings hurt if I delete your post at some point.
Yes I realize this is a Harley forum, but I thought maybe someone also owned/has owned a bike like mine which is why I asked; no I didn't "get my feelings hurt," I've been a bit po'ed because I've been working hard on my bike and I may very well have mistakenly taken the first commenters post as being condescending and basically calling me an idiot for posting on a Harley forum rather than merely trying to be helpful by saying that's basically the difference between GMC and Ford.
Anyway, I finally found the chain tensioner thanks to one commentor who pointed out my error and I definitely did too much; hopefully by tightening or loosening it I'll get the bike to run better. Appreciate anyone who tried to help.
John, not going to really be able to help you. If what you need is not on YouTube, like mentioned, a Harley forum is going to be full of landmines for a metric bike owner.
My experience was my 05 1100. I only had it a few years and it was rock solid. Put 20,000 miles on it. Only real maintenance I did other then fluids was sync the dual carburetors and adjust the valve lash.
Probably should say check lash since it was still within tolerance.
Not even sure the 650 and 1100 were similar. And to make it worse, my service manual for it is at our Virginia home. We are in Florida for the winter.
Called my son in VA but he no longer has the 650 manual and I only helped him get the clutch adjusted on the 650.
He now has a Raider 1900 belt drive Yamaha V-Star.
Probably fly in shortly after Christmas for a few days with family. Good luck.
If that Yamaha carburetor is anything like most I have worked on boats, some jets are easy to miss, since they are capped were they screw in.
There feed passages are the tube into the bowl. The jets are small and easily stopped up.
Good luck. Wish the best for you during this holiday season.
Thanks djl for the work you do on here for sure ..

well, if you are talking about removing slack, those marks mean nothing, now if you are trying to set cam timing then they do.
also, there will be slack on one side. the tension is controlled by a spring and hyd dampener so unless you have issue with the dampener, not much you can do. some are adjustable and some are not.
the FSM is your friend here or youtube. that "you-maya-make it" is a lame system and cannot set valves unless you have the tool and an indicator because it is external setup thing.
