Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Finished a stage IV build on a 107. Had a delay in installing pushrods. Lifters were soaked but installed rods 2 days later.
initial start up valve train tapping heard. Rods backed off from 4 to 3-1/2 turns. Now Cold start no valve train tapping, once warms up, tapping heard.
did lifters drain and 4 turns was too much, once engine warms lifters fill and 3-1/2 turns is still too much? Back off another 1/2 turn? adj once engine warms/pressures up?
The number of turns recommended depends very much on which adjustable pushrods you're using. The threads per inch matter. Usually the manufacturer specifies the number of turns or sometimes flats to put the lifter in the middle of its range, i.e. .100" of the total .200" of travel. Some posters on this forum, including me, found that their lifters didn't get quiet until the pushrods were extended further than the recommendation. In my case I went to .125". Note, I am using the word 'quiet' to mean acceptably low. I've never managed to get my motor to be free of valve gear noise.

107 what? M8? TC? Evo SnS? Backing off typically won't cures the noise, going deeper will.
Warm ticking can happen wout installation problems.
What cams? What AC? Was rocker shaft endplay checked? What brand lifters? There’s too much not mentioned for anyone to help. Adjusting pushrods probably not the answer
