Default Engine swap questions

So I have inherited a 1995 Ultra Classic that my grandpa bought new, when he passed it became my dads, my dad recently passed and it’s become mine. It does not run right now and the least thing my dad told me about the bike is that it needed a new motor. I know someone the laid their 2020 Electra Glide down and is selling it wrecked. He’s asking $800 for the entire bike and I was wondering if the motor and transmission would fit up in my 95. If not how complicated would it be to make it fit

You’ll need an EVO engine. Personally I’d shoot for finding 94-98. Sorry about your dad. The original motor could likely be rebuilt. Have someone look at it before deciding to yank it out. EVO’s are tough and can survive quit a bit of neglect.. it might be best to fix what you have.

alright thank you. The motor has 120k miles on it as of now. I know the transmission has been rebuilt but not the motor and with this bike being a family heirloom type thing I want to do what’s going to be best for the bike

Then definitely repair or rebuild the origin numbers match motor. The Engine is sorta t heart of the bike. It’s was Gramps.. I’d want it the way Gramps had it.. unless he painted it pink, then defiantly repaint it.

Best for the bike is brining the bike to a good mechanic, have the motor issued diagnosed and repair as needed. If it needs a full rebuild, so be it. Changing motors is not going to be any cheaper and will reduce the value of the bike with non-matching VIN #'s (motor and frame). Do the right thing for the bike and the memory.

Good points. Not sure]if you care about resale. But I'd talk to a shop about rebuilding and if you got time and money going through it and replacing reseals and bearings.

If engine stock, maybe consider cams and porting heads when apart, that won't change that it was grampa's/ If it wasn't done already.

It tough not knowing it really needs. Is it just seals, gasket and rings, or is bottom end need replacing. Bottom end could have miles of use on it at 120k.

Also depends on how much you think you will ride it. Hone and re-ring if just going to be occasional, if that is all it needs, and budget dictates. You need a good mechanic to tell you what shape it is in.

How long has it been parked, do you know anything about it? Maybe you want to see if it will start if you mechanically inclinded and go from there. Needs a rebuild ,may not mean motor is shot, just tired and ready to be gone through

As stated a 2020 M8 motor along with the electronics needed will not fit into your frame.

If the cases and cylinders are in good shape, rebuild it.

The other good question is, do you ride now? Not that you would sell it if you didn't. But how far you go with this restore could dictate how much you will ride it. It is not an ancient bike, so it is a bike that could get plenty of use. Could be a daily rider.

I just did two bikes, where I exceeded or came close to the value of the bikes. But I knew I wasn't going to sell them. Making numbers up, you are going to be in the thousands.
