Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I am from Korea so not much place to ask for help around, so thank you in advance for any helpful inputs.
I have 2004 sportster 883 with stock engine. The bike runs good and smooth when cold but it makes this really loud noise when engine gets hot(video). The noise follows with the rpm and throttle and the rpm spikes up and overall ride feels off when the noise is present. After i cool the engine, the noise is gone and the ride feels normal again.
Recently took the top end off and found one of the valve was scorched pretty bad and had it replaced. (Refer to the photo) Also replaced all four lifters with comp cams lifters(ds1003). There is no bent or significant wear on the pushrods as well.
Oil pump was recently replaced and oil pressure is fine in the range of the service manual even when the noise is present. Found a little wear on rocker bushing and had it fixed also (photo).
I dont know what could be the issue, and really just want to ride my bike stress free.
Please help me out so i can taste some american freedom here.
Primary chain tension is fine, and the sound is not consistent and occurs only after it heats up. Also, after checking with stethoscope, it is not from the primary but mostly from the front cylinder
the spalling of the valve suggest very lean fuel mix, ignition timing too early, detonation or high heat.
need to check for bad lifters, timing advance and base settings and fuel quality.
also check compression

recently had the carb rebuilt and i cant control the ignition timing since my bike has an ECM. I noticed alot of carbon built up when i replaced the faulty valve and had it well cleaned.
no sign of damage on the pistons and the rods are also good. I am not so sure about high heat but the sound is very loud at around 150 celcius.
as mentioned, had all lifters replaced once i noticed the sound but it still remains
The problem with that valve could easily be from the bike sitting in a humid environment or water getting into the motor through the intake. Rust ate the valve. Another way would be stating the bike and not riding it.

the valve had been replaced, and what do you mean by stating the bike?
Sitting. The motorcycle was not used for a very long time. 6 months or more.
I dont think the it sat for that long but on the last oil change some water was mixed in with the oil.
but, the valve had been replaced and now i am just looking to get rid of the crazy noise only when the engine is hot.
maybe its the lifter bore anyone had issues before?? 🤕
