Kick back when cranking

Ok, sorry for leaving some things out. Thought I had included everything. Yes, it has manual compression releases, work properly. Yes, heads are ported. Battery is new this year. No, I haven't had it load tested. It does have the stock battery cables, but connections are clean. I can make up heavier cables for it. Did not disassemble the compensator, just verified it was torqued to spec. Could be broken spring. Hate to pull it back apart, but will if need be.
I will make up new cables first.
What is the correct way to check the starter ?
