Getting parts ready for a winter build. Going 98 on my 88 low rider. My question is do I need to replace the cylinder studs? I understand the torque sequence however are they torque to yield from the factory? If so wouldnt they be one time use?
When I went to 98 on my 88 I reused the studs. 50k later I went to 95" and used them again. I did go to the newer style nuts that look better. Shops will quote you replacement. I am sure there is a sgtretch factor at some point.
probably stretch over yield.
a base torque is applied and then a certain degrees of extra movement.
important factor is whether you use thread lube or not, check FSM.
When assembly on your new 98" build, use the torque instructions for the head gaskets you will be using. If using cometic gaskets, follow cometic's torque procedure.
And yes, clean and lube stud threads. I would replace nuts.

To be able to achieve the proper torque required by either the factory service manual or aftermarket specifications from Cometic gaskets etc, You must lube the threads and the underside of the head bolt..
