I need the same exact Harley thrust washer 8986 which is the one included in the roller bearing kit to use on the outside between the cam gear and bearing. I measured that play I have and it is exactly .062 the same exact size as that thrust washer.
Someone had the exact same issue here on a 1999 woodruff keyed cam when upgrading to the roller bearing and this was the fix. Splined cams dont need that extra thrust washer.
Here it Is. Exactly what I am dealing with (1999 with Andrews cams and sprocket and now a upgraded rear roller bearing). Need that .055 spacer for the outside of the bearing and then all should be well.
Ok I got the .055 thrust washer in between the outer side of the bearing and cam sprocket gear now. With the gear torqued on I still have a bit of in/out movement of the entire rear cam assembly (with the tensioner shoes not contacting the chains). If I were to push on the rear cam towards the engine this would put the rear cam out of alignment with the front cam.
With the tensioner pads down in their positions there is no in/out play. I still dont like it since with the original setup with the problematic ball bearing there was NO in/out movement . Now being a roller bearing it has a floating inner race.
Should the rear cam have some endplay? I cant find this info. My sprocket alignment is perfect (making sure the cam was not pushed towards the engine).
I also found a Zippers article stating the use of the second .055 thrust washer PN 8986 like I installed here when using a keyed shaft cam I think I will give Zippers a call tomorrow to see if they can shed some light on my situation:
