Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I ordered my first oil test kit for my 2013 Dyna. Never did this before and am looking to see just how much the engine is wearing and where.. I should've done a base line from when I first built this motor so it'll be hard to tell just where I'm at but I would think this is one of those thing where it's never to late.. I will post up as info comes in..
I maintained diesel generators for a few years and that made me a big fan of annual oil analysis, it made me aware of serious fuel dilution problems with a few of the engines which turned out to be due to lousy/poorly engineered installations.
We also sent in samples of the fuel and coolant.
Question, If the oil results show wear, does it STOP the wear? It just shows its gonna happen?
One can adjust the oil used, the frequency of the changes, change the type/specification of the filter, based on the findings. It can indicate if a rebuild is needed or not.

No, I don't think so but I could be wrong.. What I am trying to determine is how much engine wear is happening.. I am sure that Blackstone has a vast library of what would be considered normal wear and tear there is on an Air Cooled HD motor based on the amount of particulates found in the oil sample. Normal vs abnormal ppm contamination.. So it's not about the oil but what is found in the oil which is totally engine related..
Keep in mind the oil analysis is used for the condition of the oil more so than the engine. While yes, excessive metals may indicate impending failure, it is not generally used for that.

I disagree.
Oil analysis is done to monitor the condition of the oil, and even more important, the machinery.
Oil is cheap, machinery is not.

I sent BS oil for analysis on 7/9/24 on my 07 EGC with 122,680 miles on it and 4280 on the oil. The results came back as good, in fact they claimed the oil could be run longer. At 125,282, the lifter blew. On disassembly, I found that the rod bearing was starting to go as evidenced by speckled piston skirts and stiff spots on the rods.. I went looking for the report but only have the info I sent to them..
