Default Lifter Discussion

Hello,

Dyna 06, 98 ci, Andrews 57 (new), new stock springs, seals and exhaust valves, even and measured spring pressures: 135/315 lbs, Rocker Lockers, S&S Quickees and S&S precision lifters only 4 years old and 15000 miles but went through a pretty tough big bore break in 3 years ago).

Issue: Ticking at all rpm, pretty loud. Also, at one occasion, after sitting 10 minutes with hot engine and warm oil, terribly loud ticking after startup. Then after 100 meters… “bang”! And it was back to “normal”again.

First I thought most of the ticking noise came from the rear cylinder, so I put it in TDCC and checked if there were any lash in the pushrods. No. So I started the bike and let it idle 5 minutes. Ticking was loud as usual, but where did it come from? Fetched my stethoscope and found the spot on the front head, close to the exhaust port.

Then I put the front cylinder in TDCC, and there was no lash. Well, so I lowered the exhaust rod 4 flats and intake 3 flats.

At the test ride it was still ticking, but the most annoying was gone, and there was no lifter collapse.

So tomorrow I will give the rear cylinder 3-4 flats as well and take her for a ride.

Anyhow, I need new lifters and been thinking of Hylift-Johnson B2313SE.

Considering my setup, described above, is this a good choice?

Thanks a lot

Sounds like a good choice to me.

I would expect that you you mean "lowered a pushrod", you meant you increased it's length and set the plunger a little deeper.. Not sure that helps with startup rattle.. Does help the higher R and idle rattles a little.. Yeah toss in a set of hi-lifts..

Yes, I meant making the pushrods longer. Not sure how much it has helped, though. It was still ticking at the startup I just did, Also, and I did not mention this, I do not have the right cold startup idle. It is ticking and rattling and fighting for its life at 900 rpm the first minutes. I replaced the IAC today, no change. Fuel Pressure is 58 psi. At the first upstart, 2 weeks ago, after rebuild and with hand pumped lifters, the startup idle was perfect the first 10 seconds, then suddenly it collapsed down to 900 rpm. Bad idling at cold startup was also a problem last year with Andrews 26. I suspect the lifters; that they do not open the valves fully so that the cylinders do not get air enough. Plugs are black after an upstart.

Update: Just came in from a ride, and the ticking is a bit less. So I would say those 3-4 flats helped some, especially when the engine has reached normal working temperature. There are fine tuning remaining though. But will wait with that until the new lifters are installed.
