Default Cam tensioner adjustment or replacement.

How do I check these? When do I need to check these? I have an 04 ECG with 23,000mi and have heard that around 30K-35K i need to check them or have them replaced. I have been using Mobil 1 the last 12K. Thanks.

There are many posts on this.I have an 04 ultra.I have 71,000 miles on it,just had the tensioners shoes replaced. They were shot, could have ruined my motor. Most guys say every 25,000 miles check them.its not a job i will do myself.reason is once you take the cam cover off, if the tensioners shoes need replaced can you do that job too?It costs a lot to have the tensioner shoes replaced, about 500 dollars.if you dont ride hard and fast and your crank is true, then your shoes might last as long as mine did, but its not worth the chance.I think now they might replace them with the new hydraulic ones that shouldnt fail like the originals do.Pre 2007 this was and is a problem.

I changed mine at 30,000 miles. They were is still in good shape but did have the usual pits and chain marks. There are two tensioners, one right behind nose cone and one behind the cam plate. The problem is that the one behind the cam plate can't be viewed. It was the one that was wore the most, on mine. You will need to remove the cam plate, lifters, and pushrods to get to it. Not a big deal if you are mechanically inclined and have a Harley service manual. But there is a lot that could go wrong, if you don't know how to realign the oil pump, allow for bleed down on the lifters, replace o-rings on oil pump, and torqueing the plate ..etc..... The good news is that the outer shoe can be viewed and should give you a thumb park idea of how the inner one is doing. Just my two cents!

I have a '99, 16,000 miles. Worried about the same thing. Paid to have them check two weeks ago. Everything fine. I will have them check in another 9k. Fairly cheap price to pay for piece of mind.

I just replaced mine at 42,200 miles... Here is what they looked like. The bike is a 2006 RK Classic, stock 88" with stage 1 & PCIII.
