Yeah it looks like the guy was blowing smoke! Its time with that kind of wear on the rear one to go ahead and upgrade to the new hydraulic setup. If your pretty good at wrenching you can do it. Lots of posts on here be sure and change those torrington bearings too.

S&S makes a high flo-high pressure pump for Pans and Shovels, or at least they did, last time I needed one was 20 years ago. Yeah, they still do. Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/OIL-PUMP-HIGH-.../dp/B000WKAR6A

Requires a drill fixture, New/Bigger holes.

So I dropped my bike off with an indy a few weeks back to replace my cam chain tensioners. The bike now has just over 30k miles on it. I'm glad I did because they had drastically changed since I last inspected them. (See attached pic). The broken one is the rear one. He found the piece at the bottom of the cam chest. It was all one functioning piece just 4k miles ago!

As an FYI I repeated the quote I was told about the "upgraded oil pump" and asked him to verify/deny it while he was in there. He confirmed that it had a heavy duty spring in it to boost oil pressure.

It snowballed from replacing the cam chain tensioners to "while you're in there....". I walked with with a 95", ported heads, adjustable pushrods (so future cams changes/cam chain tensioner changes would be easier), and SE253 cams.

Just to make you feel better about the new desighn. I pulled mine apart to do a cam at 90,000 miles (07 FXST) and the outer one had worn half way through and the inner only wore a quarter through and because its a roller chain it can only wear so far before hitting the rollers of the chain. Plus they dont have any metal it the shoe. If you want to see what they look like at 90,000miles take a look at my profile page. Great desighn. good luck. Pretty easy job.

So, were the inner cam bearings upgraded to Toyo/Torrington B148s? Were the tensioners replaced with OEM or CYCO? Were the outer cam bearings replaced? Was the oil pump replaced? The spring will boost idle oil pressure a bit but no more than that.

Thank you
S&S for performance applications. The OEM pump is quite adequate for Stage I or Stage II (Stage 1 + cams) applications.
