Hi folks!
My XLH 1200 (1991) is giving me proper grief at the moment, after starting it the engine will run for 15 or 20 seconds then cut out and refuse to restart. I then have to wait 5 or 10 minutes to try it again and the symptoms reoccur. New plugs and battery so definately not that. can anyone help please
Tim
Sounds like the carb is running out of fuel, and the 5 minute wait allows more gas to trickle in to the float bowl so that the same thing happens when you restart it.
Check the petcock diaphram and air line that runs to it first.
I'm not sure 1991 models have a diaphragm petcock, but I agree that lack of fuel is a likely cause. Try a few things. Disconnect the pipe to the carb and check fuel is running freely out of the petcock. If not, drain the tank, and remove the petcock. You may find the tank has a lot of junk around the outlet, so clean and refit. If all is well, ride on! If not, next remove the carb float bowl, check and clean if necessary. Make sure float level is correct.
