Default Gear drive Cams

What are the problems with installing gear drive cams? I am going to check my chain tensioner but if I don't see a lot of wear I think I am gong to wait another 15k or so and check it again. But If its got to be replaced I was thinking of the S&S easy start cams with new barrings. If I have to replace the tensioner than I may aswell replace the cams and barrings. But the gear drive seems to have possible problems with crank shaft run out being out of tolerance. Whats the situation with that?

What Ive heard is its become a hit and miss problem as some bikes have considerable crank/bearing run out and some fall withing the acceptable range. A local decades old dealer & friend from way back mentioned the later hyd version of the tensioners are good and has yet to replace the tensioner shoes on some pretty high mileage bikes.Price wise the upgrade is about the same as gear drive If I recall correctly. My personal bikes use S&S in one and Mackey setup in the other that work well. As far as an inspection goes the inner is more prone to wear then the outer so be cautious of what you see out front.

Quite a few! Crankshaft runout has to be within a tight tolerance, better than Harley builds them to in later engines. However you would be better off looking in the Tech forum under Engines, where you should get better info and where forum sponsors lurk, with detailed advice.
