Shovelhead crank bearing replacement
I have a '81 Shovelhead in a Low Rider. It sounds like the primary drive side crank bearing is making some noise. My question; is it possible to replace the crank bearing without tearing down the motor or do the cases need to be split? Obviously I would prefer to replace it with the motor in the bike. Any help is appreciated.

The cases must be split.
But there are other parts in that area that can make noise, how do you figure you can hear a crank bearing?

The primary drive chain was very tight and I'm sure was stressing the bearing. As I was riding it last week, I heard an intermittent high pitched squeal that sounded like a bearing. I readjusted the chain and I have not heard the high pitch squeal again, but it just doesn't sound right to me when I listen close to the case area.

Update! I took apart the primary case. All the clutch parts are in good shape.No metal shavings anywhere. However, when I turn the tranny shaft by hand, I can feel and hear it clicking. It seems to me it should turn smooth. Any ideas?
