Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I installed manual compression releases during my recent motor project, even though I really didn't need them with the cam and compression ratio I used (Andrew's TW50s). The motor starts easily without popping the releases open. It is however harder to start when using the releases. It has to crank a little longer before firing up. If the motor is warm, it's worse. For example, yesterday on a warm start I popped the releases open and cranked the starter for 4-5 seconds without it starting followed by another 3 second try immediately after. I then closed the releases and it fired right up. I have also noticed the releases don't like to close on their own.
I have 800 miles on this build right now. I did a compression check recently which showed 174 cranking compression on both cylinders. If I plug my motor specs and cams into Big Boyz calculator, that's what it shows it's supposed to be. I have not done a leak down test yet because I don't have a tester, but I am going to get one.
Does this sound like a problem I should be trying to hunt down, or is it just the nature of a cam with longer duration/overlap? I would appreciate any thoughts or advice on the matter. See my signature for additional info on the build.
