Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Not impressed with the machining tolerance of these gear sets. Crank runout is .0003", yes thats right .0027" less then max. The 2 cam gears aren't to bad for clearance, but the outer cam gear and crank gear are pitiful, some teeth have .002" and some have .0005". The engine runs fine but the noise that travels through the valve terrain and into the rocker box is awful. It is not gear whine, it is not collapsed lifters and it is not lash, it is simply noise. I did a search before I installed this garbage, specifically looking for noise complaints and found nothing. I wish S$S would warn that there will be noise. I guess I knew there would be some noise, that is why I did a search, if the gears where machined properly, I wonder if they would be quieter.
My engine has again as much noise as it did with the chains, ls this what others are finding?
I dont have the gear drive but my buddy's do and the gear noise from there moters are not bad u can here them for sure but nothing loud. The noise is so little after a week u never know it was there
I installed the S&S 510G cams in my '05 TC88 at 18,000 miles. I've put about 800 miles on it and it sounds like an old iron head Sportster, noisy as hell.

Have you listened to it with a stethoscope, is the noise transfering through to the rocker box? My gears sounds fine listening all around through the cover, the sound of it drives me nuts.
I have the 510G cams also and other then a bit of a "whine" when installed they seem good. I have a few
hundred miles on them now and they are not making as much noise so for me all is good.

you have something wrong (did you check runout, lash, ect),no reason for any noise if installed properly, like I said,we do a lot of them.no problems with fit,no noise
Mine have been noisy since install. Almost sounds like a loose pushrod, but stethoscope it and from cam chest to rocker boxes and all sounds normal. Been to 4 different shops and no one can find where it's coming from.
