Hi all, just installed s&s quickee pushrods and s&s lifters in my 103 today and I guess by reading other posts I missed a few things. first off I did not soak the new lifters......do I need to take it back apart and do this, and, is the adjustment still 24 flats for the new lifters. I started it up for just a minute and the clatter got quiet but did not go away......so...I shut it off. Will it pump its self up or do I need to dissemble and start over? What are my options? Thanks, Rick
you need to take it for a little ride and they should quiet right down. i freaked out when i first started mine after the swap. it sounded like someone threw a bucket of bolts into a metal tub. i shut it down right away and fiddled with the pushrods again. come to find out, once you ride it a couple miles, the lifters become properly pumped and it will start to sound normal again. long story short, i had everything adjusted right the first time, but disassembled and readjusted two or three times for nothing. apparently i just enjoy wasting my own time.
Thanks Deuce..........your the man! Did what you said this morning....took it out for a little ride, and BAM! Quiet as a kitten. It really freaked me out last night.....sounded just like you described. One thing that I may have to address is the fact that I took them down 24 flats instead of 20. Will this possibly be an issue? Thanks again, all replies appreciated.....Rick

It shouldn't be an issue. It just sets them slightly deeper in the lifter. Many advocate the additional adjustment to keep things quiet.
Thanks for the intel nhrider1. you guys took a load off my mind, the last thing I wanted was to screw up my bike. I took good care about getting the cam lobes right before the adjustments, and was wondering where I went wrong, but after the easy ride this morning things settled into place. Thanks again guys........Rick

Sounds like you have things under control, but in order to know how many flats of adjustment is appropriate, you need to know the thread pitch of the pushrods you're using. Also, are you running regular S&S lifters, or S&S limited travel lifters?

glad i could help bud. as others have said, the 24 flats shouldn't hurt you and many go deeper than 20 to try and quiet everything down. as long as she sounds and runs fine, leave it be.
