Default Cam and Gear question

Ok don’t understand this. I am thinking about changing a cam in my bike. My wife’s bike had a cam change and we still have the old N grind cam that came out of it. I thought I would practice on removing the gear to get the process down before I changed mine; I wanted to change the gear. I pressed the gear off and no key or slot on the cam gear, though there is a slot in the cam for a key. What am I missing here?

I've done 2Andrews cam changes on my 86 and didn't bother with swapping the gear. What are you putting in?

No key is normal. Mark the area on the gear where the "key slot" on the cam is. Then remove gear and install the gear in the same location on the new cam (with the mark lined up with the slot on the new cam). There are more precise methods:

Measurements as follows:
2 pins @ .123" dia. X 1" ol. length
1 pin @ .123" dia. X 1" ol. length. A .270" section of the ol. is necked down to .074".
Hose clamp the pins to the gear, insert necked down pin in the slot, and slowly press gear on

Easy way to install gear:

Wrap cam in some paper, and bury in in some dry ice for two hours (the paper keeps the ice from sticking to the part).

Heat the gear to 300 degrees F.

The gear will drop right on to the shaft, the gear will stay loose for a few seconds in case you need to turn it for correct alignment.

Old jet engine mechanics trick.

This how we do large diesel engine, use a cooking hot plate and they actually make a marking pin where the paint starts to melt at a certain degrees indicating the gear is ready. I also do my cam gears at home like mentioned above using the heat and freeze method.

I always use the old gear as then I know it's the right size, hate it when they whine like a stuffed Tranny...….mind you depends on the Tranny, some don't being stuffed with an oversized gear

There is no key, it's an interference fit and there's good advice on fitting them but y'all need a press to get them off....a bit like them Trannies.....

In other news....I just bought me a Shovelhead
