Default Evo timing.....

I have an 84 fxrs with the evo, when i got it it had been changed to points. Im trying to install a new electronic ignition and need to know the steps for timing it. Which timing mark to use on the flywheel and any other pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

What ignition are you using? I've put a coupe Ultima 53-644 ignitions and all I needed to do was find TDC on the compression stoke of the front cylinder.

Put the front cylinder up to top dead center and you should see the line in the window, down on the left side of the case (As shown in the attached picture). Not sure what ignition you have but like Chaz said an Ultima or Dynatek with a status light can help you to set it perfectly.. If you're using an inductive timing light it can be a pain in the *** and messy.. I also think you should get the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for your bike...

If you plan on working on your own bike then you need a Factory Service Manual.
To be clear I'm talking about the one put out by Harley not Clymer or Haynes.

All that said exactly what electronic ignition are you trying to install?

Thanks.. Its a dynatek ignition... hoping to make some progress on it later. Had it firing a little bit but only sounded like it was on one cylinder. Ordered the service manual also, just waiting on it to het here.

What What coil are you running single fire or dual fire? If you're still running dual fire coil put dip switch number 6 to off.. If you're running a single fire, put that same dip switch to on..

Having the HD Factory Service Manual is always good advice.

But you need to carefully read the install / wiring instructions that came with the ignition. The FSM won't help you at all with that ignition, other than show you the TDC and 35BTC marks on the flywheel.

Dynatek makes several versions of ignition for that bike. Without knowing exactly which ignition you are trying to use, none of us can offer the correct information.
