On my 1996 Ultra Classic, the shift lever is loose on the shift shaft. How much work is there to replacing it. I have replaced them on other bikes, never a Harley.
All help appreciated.

it can be a pain the right way to remove it is remove the primary. there is a lever you can buy that doesn't need you to take the primay off but you have to cut the old one off with a dremel.
Funny I was looking up this very problem today and arrived at that site.
I found a thread on another forum where a guy installed it, contacted him, and this is what he had to say about it.
"Yep. I put it on my 2002 and it lasted as good as new to the day I sold the motorcycle in 2010 . I could say that the Better Lever might outlast the rest of the motorcycle"
I had to pull my inner primary to fix a transmission leak and decided that I'd change the shifter shaft seal while I was in there. I had no play in the lever but found the splines were shot on the shaft. I considered using the betterlever but they were waiting for a new batch to be machined. I ended up putting in the Baker shifter pawl and their lever......good stuff!
Removing the inner primary cover is a very straight forward job, but only you can decide if it is the type of job you want to tackle.
If you are a do it yourself`er on your bikes or cars, you will have no problem doing this job.
If you don`t want to do the job yourself, it will save you some labor money.
But keep in mind that even though you save the labor cost by using that expensive shift lever, there may be other reasons to get into that area sooner or later, such as leaks, belt changes....
Your bike is a 1996, how many miles on the drive belt?
If the splines on the shaft are damaged, the new shift lever won`t solve the problem anyway.
