Default bike not turning over? jumping worked....

1990 softail........hitting the start switch does nothing, jumping the solenoid works....im not sure what I should be looking at to fix the problem? does the 30 amp breaker in the back of the bike on the splash guard have anything to do with the starter? with the ignition switch on, I had 0 volts running across the 2 posts...I was sure I should have 12....thinking that's the problem but don't know if that's involved with the starter....
could use some help. thanks

Check for voltage with a 12v test light at the solenoid terminal ( small wire )...power must go through the Starter Relay via the start switch.

When you hit the switch do you get 12v on pin 30 of the starter relay?
Do you hear the relay switch when you hit the start button?

You should have a 5 prong relay of which your bike only uses 4 of them.
The center pin is for dressers.

Did you ever check if that was a ground or if it had voltage on it?
I would check it with a volt meter before I just hooked it up to something.

The relay needs to be grounded...as in the schematics. ( Terminal 85 ).

It could be that the PO ran a fused wire from the battery to pin 30 on your starter relay to fix the dreaded click.
Check to see if that is so and if the fuse is good.
