Default shifter pawl spring

tranny is going back together and have a question on the shift pawl. There are 2 springs, which is the one that fails, and can cause gear damage when the broken part falls inside?

I figured it's the upper one (item 35 in the pic), since it's smaller gauge wire, so I've replaced it with new, but thought I'd ask before I closed things up. If the other one is the one prone to failure, I'll have to run to the dealer and get one.

replacing the little one is a good idea too if that spring is weak it will cause all sorts of shifting problems like false neutral and not shifting unless you hit it a few times.

I was just looking at that picture and it hit me. your working on a twinkie those springs don't fail like the older ones. you probably don't need a new one unless you really want one

Go back in with an 01 and later shiftdrum, pawl, pawl spring, and a trap door if you want to tear it down that far.
