Adjustable pushrods in 84 FXRS

Default Adjustable pushrods in 84 FXRS
I am rebuilding the top end of a 84 FXRS that I got from my buddy. He told me to put everything together first(heads,rocker box intake) and then put the push rods in. I have trying to figure out how to do this. Every how to ive seen has the heads and rocker boxes off. Can someone help or point me in the right direction to get these push rods in?

Turn the motor til the piston is at the top, collapse the pushrods and slip them in. Make sure your pushrods aren't for a stroker motor, they won't fit.

This is probably a stupid question, but how do you tell if the piston is at the top with the heads and rocker box on?

Stick a straw down the spark plug hole.

Put a pencil through the spark plug hole . Put in 2nd gear, rotate the tire, feel for the push up.
